Book Launch

“WAR, REVOLUTION AND SOCIETY IN THE RIO DE LA PLATA, 1808-1810: THOMAS KINDER’S NARRATIVE OF A JOURNEY TO MADEIRA, MONTEVIDEO AND BUENOS AIRES”:

Book Launch by Malyn Newitt, Emeritus Professor of History at King’s College.

Date: Thursday 11 March 5-7.30 pm

Venue: The Jessell Room – Senate House, First Floor, Malet Street, WC1E 7HU

The book contains the narrative –published for the first time- of an English banker’s voyage to Buenos Aires and Montevideo in 1808-10. His journey to the Río de la Plata followed the ill-fated British attempts to capture Buenos Aires in 1806-7. He obtained first hand information about the campaigns of Beresford and Whitelocke and became familiar with all the leading figures of the revolutionary period. His narrative constitutes a very significant first-hand commentary on the beginnings of the revolution in Montevideo and Buenos Aires and provides a detailed description of the economy and society of the two cities on the eve of their independence from Spain.

This event is free.

EVENT CALENDAR - MARCH 2010

Ignacio Iasparra - photography exhibition

Date: 5 February to 20 March 2010

Venue: John Jones, 4 Morris Place, off Stroud Green Road, N4 3JG

Iasparra's photographic works create ambiguous and only partially defined enviroments, where finete detail merges into a seemingly infinite enviroment. Although his images may reference natural form, they evolve into large-scale abstract frames. Together they create sense of enclosure and disorientation, raising fundamental question regarding our perception of time and space.

There will be a special presentation of the exhibition on Wednesday 24th of February from 6.30 to 9 pm.
